Early in 2004 the Ministry of Education and Science (Spanish Government), Generalitat de Catalunya (local Catalan Government) and Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) took the initiative of creating a National Supercomputing Center in Barcelona. BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and was officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located at the Torre Girona chapel. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computational Applications in Science and Engineering.
The BSC-CNS has brought together a critical mass of top-notch researchers, high performance computing experts and cutting-edge supercomputing technologies in order to foster multidisciplinary scientific collaboration and innovation.
The Computer Sciences Department of the BSC-CNS focuses on building upon currently available hardware and software technologies and adapting them to make efficient use of supercomputing infrastructures. The department proposes novel architectures for processors and memory hierarchy and develops programming models and innovative implementation approaches for these models as well as tools for performance analysis and prediction. In addition, the department is working on resource management at various component levels (processor, memory, storage) and for different execution environments, including Grid and e- Business platforms and application optimization.
At an international level, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center has already participated in an impressive number of activities. The BSC-CNS has been particularly active in the 6th and 7thFramework Programme of the European Commission and participating in the following projects: DEISA,eDEISA, HPC-EUROPA, PRACE (Infrastructures), SARC, ACOTES, BREIN, BEINGRID, XTREEMOS, SORMA,MERASA, VELOX, PROARTIS, IOLanes, ENCORE (IST), and is a partner in the HiPEAC Network of Excellence.
